Emergy Response to Climate Disasters in Gorontalo

Emergency Response to Climate Disasters in Gorontalo : Celebes Bergerak Open Donation

The Floods in Gorontalo City spread to six sub-districts. The worst-hit areas were Dumbo Raya and Kota Barat sub-districts with water levels reaching over 50 centimeters. As reported by Antara, three other sub-districts were also affected but their conditions were not as severe. Head of the Gorontalo City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Mahmud Baderan explained that the floods were caused by high rainfall that triggered the Bone and Bolango Rivers to overflow, plus river flows from Lake Limboto.

In order to carry out an emergency response, BPBD had evacuated victims and distributed aid packages, such as such as food, mineral water, and medical care for injured victims. However, the government assistance could not reach the number of refugees in refugee camps. Based on the monitoring by Celebes Bergerak Community, there were more than 35.000 people affected by the disaster who had difficulty to get food, clean water, mineral water and necessities for vulnerable groups such as pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, as well as people with disabilities in temporary refugee camps due to floods that had destroyed people’s houses submerged and floated away.
